Weekend Roundup
February 26, 2009
Happy Weekend! We've shifted our weekend roundup over to Thursday, in order to give you more time to plan (and to catch the events happening on Fridays). Here are some of the most appealing things I have found:
This is the last weekend of Black History Month, and thus your last chance to get over to the Henry Ford Museum to see their "Minds on Freedom" show and the associated hands-on activities. You can even get on the Rosa Parks bus, which has a special connection here in Detroit.
Got a dog lover in the house? This weekend at Cobo Center, scores of dogs will compete in the Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show . You can see agility trials, Dog Scout and Pet Therapy demonstrations, and even a special visit from celebrity pooches "Marley" from the movie "Marley and Me" and "Uno," the beagle that won the Westminster Dog Show a few years ago.
Feeling a little more outdoorsy? The Southeastern Livingston County Recreation Authority is sponsoring Arctic Blast this weekend, which includes mom-and-kid and dad-and-kid sled races at Mt. Brighton Ski Hill. It's supposed to warm up, but I know they can actually make snow at Mt. Brighton. That would be even more fun, to be able to do something wintry without freezing your feetsies off!
And if you're looking for a fun way to wind up the weekend, go see Gemini for free at Target Family Sundays at the Detroit Institute of Arts . This folk duo, made up of twin brothers, has been around forever and appeals to kids with their slightly goofy, spirited performances. I remember seeing them when I was a kid, and now my children have become fans!

Weekend Roundup!
January 30, 2009
Of course, the biggest event this weekend will be the Super Bowl. But if you're not a football fan, or just want to get out and away from the TV for awhile, there are all kinds of fun things going on. Pancakes and Hiking: Tomorrow, have a brisk walk with an interpreter and then eat pancakes at Stony Creek Metropark . Little Women: I loved this book when I was a kid and cannot wait Read more...

Fall Festivities at the Zoo
October 03, 2008
Although the zoo is summer is quite the place to be, I love it in fall. The trees turn, the air is cooler, the animals are a little friskier, and it's just generally a little less crowded and a lot more fun. And you can kick off the fall season at the Detroit Zoo with this weekend's Fall Festival . There will be entertainment, food and beverages, and (for an extra charge) hayrides and a Read more...
No Excuse to be Bored This Weekend!
August 29, 2008
If you find yourself bored this weekend, you are just beyond hope. Two big festivals, some smaller ones, the Detroit Grand Prix and the State Fair are all in town. It's like everybody is trying to get one last gulp of summer before the kids go back to school and the weather turns cold. Here's my very condensed guide to some of the big events this weekend: Detroit Jazz Festival : Been going Read more...
It's Time For the Fair!
August 21, 2008
It's almost here! It starts tomorrow! Are you excited? I am! What am I nattering on about? Why, the State Fair , of course. It starts tomorrow and runs through Labor Day and is one of the most fun, corny, family-friendly events to hit town all summer. I'm a teensy bit biased my neighborhood is across Woodward from the fairgrounds and so ever since we moved into this house, it's been a major Read more...
See Mosaic at the Zoo
August 20, 2008
We've got a lot to be proud of here in the Detroit Metro area. One of our major gifts is that we have a lot of talented performers around here I have often said that if you walk into any live music bar on Saturday night or church on Sunday morning you'll hear talent equal to or greater than the latest "American Idol." And a great way to watch some of the best of the next generation of talent is Read more...
Escape for a Little Zoo-Mance
July 23, 2008
One of the cooler things our Savvy team here does occasionally is give our readers ideas for grown up activities. After all, "escapes" can mean a few hours away from our beloved children, right? I know I am a better mom and happier partner after a few hours to myself or a date night with my husband. And speaking of date nights, here's kind of a fun one: the zoo is having a " Summer Zoomance " Read more...
Summer Reads: Raccoon Tune
July 15, 2008
Summer reading time is here! Maybe it's the longer hours of daylight, or at least the fantasy of lazy afternoons relaxed on the patio with a good book, but I've always got a good stock of things I want to read come summer. And some years I even get through most of them. For my daughter, reading is such a part of her everyday life that the concept of "summer reading" does not occur to her as Read more...
Three Days in Detroit, Day 3: Suburbia, Seals, and Sweet Shopping
July 10, 2008
So far during our "Three Days in the D" we've stayed mostly in the city, and there's certainly a lot more to do here that I could tell you about in my limited space here. But the suburbs have a style and personality all their own, along with a few don't-miss landmarks. Start off along Woodward Avenue, itself a landmark (and the easiest way to get from most points downtown to the suburbs since Read more...
River Navigation: Family Picks for River Days
June 20, 2008
Starting today, one of the newest, and for my money one of the best, festivals of the summer gears up along the Detroit River. It's GM River Days weekend! If you haven't already checked out all of the great things happening along the riverfront, now's the time. There will be carnival rides, music, food, a tour of a tall ship, art, cars, and even more along the waterfront this weekend. Based on Read more...
Natural encounters
May 19, 2008
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! And no, I'm not talking about the sports teams. But you can see some red wings (sorry, badddd pun). See, I'm talking about places to check out our local wildlife. Beyond the zoo, there are a lot of places to get up close and personal with our animal (and avian and insect) friends. Did you know there's a bird observatory at the University of Michigan Dearborn? I Read more...
Getting Out While the Sun Shines
May 15, 2008
Visit a farm: Kensington Metropark and Calder Dairy have open-to-the public farms which you can visit, see demonstrations and pet farm animals. Calder Dairy also has the most amazing, delicious ice cream. The parks have historical farm demonstrations, so kids can learn about how farming was done "in the old days." At Calder, they can see how the milk they drink gets from the cow to them. Go on Read more...
5 Fun Ways to Enjoy Belle Isle
May 13, 2008
Belle Isle is one of Detroit's jewels and, despite the city's not keeping it up as well as they ought, it's an incredibly lovely place to explore with million-dollar views of Windsor, the downtown skyline, and the river. It was actually designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York's Central Park. Here are five things to see and do while you're there: 1) Historical Markers Read more...
