Tuesday List: Mirror, Mirror

January 13, 2009

Today's "list" theme is top places for your child to see her reflection. Little kids love this -- I was just reminiscing with my husband about how our daughter, when she was a toddler, would lean bizarrely in the grocery cart and then start smiling into the air, and I would always be mystified as to what she was doing until I followed her glance and saw she was looking at herself in the mirrors  Read more...

Tuesday Top Five: Favorite Posts of the Year

December 30, 2008

Wow, I can't believe 2008 is almost over! It quite frankly has not been the best one ever here in Detroit, but one of the highlights of my year is taking on this Savvy Source job. It's been so much fun learning more about this city I have called home for almost my entire life, and getting to know and connect with all of you. Here's a Top Five posts of the year for me -- just a simple  Read more...

Tuesday Reviews-Day: Toys That Will Last

December 09, 2008

These toys, reviewed here on Savvy Source, are not just "lasting" from a quality standpoint, but are "lasting" because they are the kinds of things children will play with over, and over, and over again. Those are the kinds of things we parents love to buy, especially in this economy when the frequent trips to the toy store are not in the budget! Wooden Stringing Beads Set "Making  Read more...

No Excuse to be Bored This Weekend!

August 29, 2008

If you find yourself bored this weekend, you are just beyond hope. Two big festivals, some smaller ones, the Detroit Grand Prix and the State Fair are all in town. It's like everybody is trying to get one last gulp of summer before the kids go back to school and the weather turns cold. Here's my very condensed guide to some of the big events this weekend: Detroit Jazz Festival : Been going  Read more...

Tuesday Top Five: Getting to Know Local Landmarks

June 24, 2008

What better time to get to know Detroit than during this (so far glorious) summer? Of course, there are the many fun events that can drag even the most homebody-ish of families out for a good time. But did you know that many of Detroit's most intriguing venues offer tours? Of course there are the public attractions you might expect, but many unexpected venues offer peeks behind the scenes. One  Read more...

River Navigation: Family Picks for River Days

June 20, 2008

Starting today, one of the newest, and for my money one of the best, festivals of the summer gears up along the Detroit River. It's GM River Days weekend! If you haven't already checked out all of the great things happening along the riverfront, now's the time. There will be carnival rides, music, food, a tour of a tall ship, art, cars, and even more along the waterfront this weekend. Based on  Read more...

Grandparent Outings: Talking History

June 16, 2008

If you're lucky enough to have parents who live nearby or who visit frequently enough it sometimes seems that they do you get to witness the wonder of that special, besotted sort of love grandparent feel for their grandkids. We're lucky enough to live a few miles away from my parents, and the relationship between them and my children is one of the joys of my life (added perk free babysitting!).  Read more...

Motor Muster: Father's Day Nirvana for Car Guys

June 13, 2008

A Fathers Day tradition at least for the gearhead dads out there returns to The Henry Ford this weekend for the annual Motor Muster on Saturday and Sunday. The classic car show will feature vehicles from the 1930s to the 1970s, with a couple of special events planned to honor the centennial of both the Ford Model and of General Motors. Motor Muster will honor the 100th anniversary of the Model  Read more...

Keep learning going all summer with free museum visits

June 12, 2008

For many kids around here, school's out this week, if it's not already. If you're not selling a kidney to get your child into their preschool's summer program, you're likely getting a little nervous about finding things to do that will be fun, enriching and won't break the bank. Lovely reader Lisa reminded me about the Museum Adventure Pass , sponsored by Macy's. This awesome program lets you  Read more...

Things That Make You Go Vroom

May 14, 2008

Let's leave out the most obvious here: Cars, cars and more cars. We're in Motown, here, so it's not like there's any lack of cool car related stuff to do. But there's more to Detroit's "Motor City" nickname than just car motors. For example, there's the hydroplane races on the Detroit River every summer. The 100th running of the annual American Powerboat Racing Association, or APBA, Gold Cup  Read more...
