Tuesday Top Five: Things That Matter -- and Things That Don't

January 06, 2009

As parents, we're always worrying about doing right by our kids, and can stress out abut the smallest details (especially, I must say, with the first child -- I am finding, and everyone I know reports, a much more mellow time with the second). Our theme today is Top Five Things That Really Matter with preschoolers, and five things that really don't. Here's my take on this: What  Read more...

Dealing With Grief During the Holidays

December 11, 2008

A couple of deaths in the family last month have me thinking about grief and the holidays. It's a time of year so focused on family, and family gatherings, that when someone is missing it can really affect your enjoyment of the celebrations -- or even your wanting to celebrate at all. One organization that caters especially to children is Sandcastles . The support group for kids  Read more...

Tuesday Top Five: Best of the Month

September 30, 2008

Here's a fun Tuesday Top Five for us this week -- we're looking back at our favorite posts of this month's theme, the social life of preschoolers. Our national bloggers wrote about the best ways to handle shy kids -- basically, honor them and don't ever apologize for them. I really liked this, being somewhat shy myself, but when dealing with my lovely child I have the opposite situation  Read more...

Digging For Your Roots

September 24, 2008

Preschoolers are just learning about families beyond the people who live with them and care for them every day -- that (if they are lucky) those nice people who spoil them and love them to pieces are actually their parents' parents, and part of their family just like you or their brothers and sisters. If you're lucky enough to have your own grandparents still around as well, they can get an even  Read more...

Tame Sibling Issues With Proper Preparation

September 10, 2008

Sibling rivalry isn't just a concept in our house. It's the day-to-day reality of a little girl who has recently realized that that baby Mommy and Daddy brought home from the hospital six months ago 1) isn't going anywhere 2) has needs of his own that sometimes clash with hers 3) expects her to share her mommy and daddy. And for all we know, our little boy is feeling some sibling issues as well,  Read more...

Motor Muster: Father's Day Nirvana for Car Guys

June 13, 2008

A Fathers Day tradition at least for the gearhead dads out there returns to The Henry Ford this weekend for the annual Motor Muster on Saturday and Sunday. The classic car show will feature vehicles from the 1930s to the 1970s, with a couple of special events planned to honor the centennial of both the Ford Model and of General Motors. Motor Muster will honor the 100th anniversary of the Model  Read more...

Tuesday top five: Father's Day picnic spots

June 10, 2008

Still looking for something to do for Father's Day? How about a picnic? We've been doing a Father's Day picnic at least since my husband became a father four years ago, and it's a fun, relaxed way to celebrate the day. Whether it's sandwiches and potato chips or something more elaborate, everything tastes better when you eat it outside. Here's a roundup of some great picnic spots to enjoy the  Read more...

History Lessons: Historic Fort Wayne

May 21, 2008

Believe it or not, Detroit's place in history did not begin with the Model T. In the early history of the United States, Detroit, with its proximity to British Canada, played a strategic role. If you've got a kid who loves to play "Army" or even dress in camouflage, a visit to a real live fort could be an interesting way to expose them to local history. While any traces of its colonial past  Read more...
