Tuesday List: Mirror, Mirror

January 13, 2009

Today's "list" theme is top places for your child to see her reflection. Little kids love this -- I was just reminiscing with my husband about how our daughter, when she was a toddler, would lean bizarrely in the grocery cart and then start smiling into the air, and I would always be mystified as to what she was doing until I followed her glance and saw she was looking at herself in the mirrors mounted above the produce stands. We have a big mirror at the top of the stairs and it's been a ritual with both kids to show them their reflection after naptime. And even furry "kids" are fascinated -- one of my favorite memories of my goofy male cat as a kitten is him hissing at the little kitty he spied in the mirror.

This week, of course, the best place for kids to see their reflection is beaming back at them from the shiny steel and chrome of the cars on display at the Detroit Auto Show. In all honesty I would recommend against bringing small kids to the "auto industry prom" --it's too crowded, too hot, and if you are little, probably too boring. However, if you can get there right at the opening, on a weekday, and don't have any must-sees it's worth a shot.

A better car-related reflection would be off the shiny glass of our iconic skyscraper, the GM Renaissance Center. The building is even open for tours.

The Detroit Science Center has mirrors used in all kinds of cool ways -- kids can see themselves playing in a band in the music exhibit, dressed up as all kinds of neat things in Kids Town, or seeing light bounce around.
