One of the things I love about being in Metro Detroit is its cultural diversity. Hamtramck alone is like the UN with its huge mix of cultures -- a woman I know who taught there once told me something like 17 languages were spoken in her school. Add in the various "towns"-- Mexicantown, Greektown, the Hungarian and Polish enclaves that still hang on in the southwest part of the city, Italian areas on the east side, Asian in Madison Heights and Orthodox Jewish in Oak Park, and it's a wonderful mix of people from all over the world.

Teaching your kids about other cultures is one of the best gifts you can give them. As the world becomes ever smaller, your child's future is likely to include people from all over the world as fellow students, friends and business associates, and having a healthy understanding of and respect for other cultures is an essential skill.
