Shopping off the Beaten Path

November 21, 2008

With the economy tanking, we're looking to spend less at the holidays this year -- or at least spend better. One way to do that is ditch the mall and look for interesting, creative gifts that are off the beaten path. So I am intrigued by the Russell Bazaar.

Housed in the Russell Industrial Center, a sprawling Albert Kahn-designed factory north of Eastern Market, the Bazaar has more than 150 vendors selling everything from toys to art to food. Its holiday events kick off this weekend with a singing Santa, live music and other fun stuff.

It's based on a European marketplace, and allows craftspeople and small business owners to get launched without the expense of a full-time, full size storefront. I've talked  ot the owners of the Russell Industrial Center before and it's really awesome what they are doing there, and absolutely worth a look.
