It's Time For the Fair!

It's almost here! It starts tomorrow! Are you excited? I am!

What am I nattering on about? Why, the State Fair, of course. It starts tomorrow and runs through Labor Day and is one of the most fun, corny, family-friendly events to hit town all summer.

I'm a teensy bit biased my neighborhood is across Woodward from the fairgrounds and so ever since we moved into this house, it's been a major part of our August reality. Just today I was heading down Woodward near the 8 Mile intersection with my kids and got to say "Look! Over there! In that trailer! Sheep!" A farmer was towing his to the fair for display, although sadly, they were not in fact sheep in a Jeep.

We tend to skip the rides and games they are pretty expensive. We're all about the livestock. For city folk like us, this is like getting a glimpse into another world. I love seeing the 4H kids proudly displaying their projects, love getting to pet the horses and coo at the little bunnies and watch baby chicks cautiously emerging into the world.

Our major favorites are the racing pigs, the 50-cent all-you-can-drink chocolate milk at the Dairy Barn (and you can milk a cow, too, if you're game), and the Miracle of Life Animal Birthing exhibit. There are also contests every day, most related to the theme of the day such as apples, horses, grapes, etc. as well as performances all over the fairgrounds.

And there's fried dough in many forms. What more could you want?
