Layover Lifesavers: Kid-Friendy Stuff at Metro

July 02, 2008

Metro's always gotten a somewhat unfair rap as a difficult airport to travel. So imagine my surprise when I discover there are not one or two, but six kids' play areas in the massive McNamara Terminal. I'll admit, we're not big air travelers, so the last time I  traveled there I was pregnant with my first kid and more concerned with not throwing up than with anything else kid related that may have been going on.

There are four play areas in Concourse A, and one each in the smaller  Concourses B and C. Another lifesaver for families they have family restrooms just everywhere (nothing makes you appreciate plentiful restrooms, much less a clean, kid friendly ones, than having a little potty-trainee in tow).

Some other cool stuff kids might like the gorgeous water feature located at the entrance of the tunnel from Concourse A to B and C.  Its arcing lines echo air routes. And the Express Tram running from end to end of Concourse A is just pretty cool (it runs like a sideways elevator).

As far as food, there's sushi, awesome deep-dish Pizza Papalis pizza, and Gayle's  Chocolates. Yes, that's right, delicious, locally-made chocolates right at a gate. Grab some video mix and a chocolate covered pretzel and settle in to watch the kiddos play!

Good to know about the play areas :)A note on the restaurants? Most don't allow strollers in, so if you're traveling alone with an infant not yet ready for a high chair? You'll be out of luck if you want to try to sit down and eat.
